PROPOSED BUILDING EXPANSION
Building
Committee Update
The Building Committee met in early June and agreed that
the next step of the project process would be to develop an architectural
Request for Proposal (RFP). The RFP would be sent to several firms for them to
develop a proposal to begin developing actual plans for expansion of our
facility. The drawings that were previously developed were conceptual in nature
and served their intended use for illustrative purposes for the Capital
Campaign. Now it is time to move to the next step of developing actual
architectural options that will ultimately result in a set of construction
documents. The committee appointed an Architectural Sub-Committee (ASC) to
develop an RFP to be sent to several firms that have been recommended to us from
several sources. The ASC met several times and developed an RFP that was
approved by the Church Council on July 15, 2008 and sent out to seven firms on
July 16, 2008. The RFP included a total project budget of $750,000. This was
based upon $450,000 of capital campaign commitments and a proposed mortgage of
$300,000 as recommended by the Finance Committee. This figure was also approved
by Council for use in the RFP. Please note that these figures are subject to
congregational approval before engaging any architectural firm. The seven firms
were provided the opportunity to visit the church and submit any questions they
had to the Committee by August 5, 2008. Several firms did visit the church and
some submitted a list of questions. The ASC met on August 5, 2008 and developed
responses to all of the questions. The responses were then sent to all firms by
August 8, 2008. Proposals were received on August 21, 2008 and the ASC met to
review them. The entire Building Committee also met to prepare for the
interviews to be held on September 3, 2008. The following outlines the next
steps:
8/25, 7 PM - ASC Meeting to rate proposals and short list to 3 firms
8/26 — Advise firms of who made the short list
9/3, 6-9 PM — Building Committee interviews short listed firms.
9/4, 7 PM - Building Committee Meeting to select Architectural Firm (please
advise if you are unable to attend).
9/8, 7 PM - Council Meeting - Selected firm will be recommended to Council for
approval.
9/14 — Congregational Meeting - Pending council approval the architectural
firm will be recommended to the congregation for their approval. The proposed
mortgage will also be presented for approval as well as the total project budget
of $750,000.
Congregational Meeting
The congregational meeting was held September, 14, 2008 and the
following items were approved:
- Allocation of $750K for
the proposed expansion
- Approval of a potential $300K
mortgage to make up the difference between the $450K pledged and the $750K
- Approval of the architectural firm
of Donnelly Wagner Nelson Architects to do the detailed
architectural design of the proposed expansion
- Approval of $45K to be paid to the
architectural firm of Donnelly Wagner Nelson Architects for
the detailed architectural design.
Message from Pastor Ferreri
TOUCHING LIVES FOR JESUS
-
YESTERDAY, TODAY AND TOMORROW
Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ,
Since 1958 the people of Resurrection have been committed to our mission
statement: "To reach out and serve so that all may come to know the love of
God and the forgiveness of Jesus Christ." Our mission statement has been
faithfully lived out by the Saints of various generations. We are a congregation
in mission, Touching Lives for Jesus - Yesterday, Today and Tomorrow.
We are building on faith. We are building on the faith that God gives to us. It
is a faith that challenges us and seeks to help us grow. It is faith in the
Gospel of God in Jesus Christ. We also build on the faith of the Saints of the
past, those faithful disciples who through the power of the Holy Spirit had the
vision and the courage to form a new congregation, to purchase two acres of
land, and to build Christ's church.
This brochure is an important mile marker for us on our journey in faith. It is
a window into our work together as God's Spirit leads us. Its vibrant colors
reflect the truth that we are building on a living faith. We are being
challenged to build additional space not that we might boast of brick and
mortar, but that we would be better equipped to be about the work to which our
Lord calls us - Touching Lives for Jesus. "For
by grace you have been saved through faith, and this is not your own doing; it
is the gift of God - not the result of works, so that no one may boast"
(Ephesians 2:8-9 NRSV)
As you glance through this brochure, please do so in prayer. Pray that
God's Spirit will open your heart ever wider to the part that you play in this
important effort. Pray that God's Spirit will touch your heart in a way
that sharpens your awareness of God's call to you to be faithful and generous
stewards of the resources entrusted into your care. Pray that God will
stir up in you a true desire to be a committed and faith-filled participant in
this wonderful effort.
Our journey forward gives us the occasion to reflect upon the wonderful
accomplishments of the past, to remind ourselves of our rich heritage and to
strengthen our resolve in facing new challenges in the future. The challenge is
now ours as we continue to grow in faith, hope and love. We have before us a
marvelous opportunity to expand our facilities to support the ministries of
Jesus Christ.
I pray and give thanks to God for the gift of the Holy Spirit that empowers us
all to be generous and faithful disciples as we continue "Touching Lives for
Jesus."
Yours in Christ,
Charles Ferreri, Pastor
Yesterday
March 30,1958
First service at Sayen Elementary School. Resurrection became an
official congregation of the New Jersey Synod with 68 charter members.
July 10,1960
Ground was broken for the present church building.
February 12,1961
Services were held in the new church for the first time.
1995
Fellowship Hall added much needed office, meeting, nursery, and Sunday
School space and a new kitchen.
|
 |
| Today |
|
| Sufficient space
for our growing ministries has become a problem. Part of Fellowship Hall
is used for storage, taking up valuable space. There is inadequate space
for activities such as the Mother/Daughter banquet and Thanksgiving meal
for those in need. |
|
The Sunday School
environment is crowded and noisy with constant disruptions. Too much
time is spent gathering needed materials and setting up for class. With
90 young people last year, our Vacation Bible School had insufficient
classroom space. In one class, teachers and children sat on the floor as
there was no room for tables and chairs. |
 |
| The Food Pantry
has grown significantly. Facilities that support the food pantry are
spread throughout the back hallway, back closet, fellowship hall, and
conference room. The proposed expansion would locate all the support in
one location, simplify food distribution, and enable us to serve more
people. Jesus said "Feed my sheep" |
|
| Youth
Ministry - The expansion will provide the Youth Ministry Team
a safe place to gather and enjoy fellowship, offer outreach to their
community through service projects, learn leadership skills and grow
with each other in Christian values. |
 |
| Tomorrow |
|
| The Planning Committee listened to the congregation and
concentrated on additional space for Sunday School, storage, a larger
more inviting narthex, and some additional seating in the sanctuary |
|
Planned improvements
The expansion will add ; approximately 2,100 sq. ft.
Educational Space
- Approximately
900 sq. ft. 4 classrooms providing a quiet teaching
environment with storage space for materials and supplies.
Flex Space - 300 sq. ft. next to
nursery room that can be used as a classroom, meeting room, or for
storage.
Storage Space - 253 sq. ft. 4
closets for storage of tables and chairs and dividers from Fellowship
Hall.
New Hallway and Vestibule - 200 sq. ft.
Will extend from present hallway by kitchen area to new entrance.
Enlarged and Improved Narthex
240 sq. ft. Will have coat closets/
and doors into overflow seating and hallway.
|
Overflow Seating - 300 sq. ft.
Will accommodate up to 30 people; may have a clear divider so it can be
used as a "crying room" for parents and young children.
Food Pantry - all the support
services will be located in one location (our present coat closet area)
and greatly simplify food distribution.
Safer Entrance/Exit from Nottingham Way
that will connect existing driveway and parking area to the Synod
parking lot and provide some additional parking.
Estimated Cost:
Site work $150,000-$200,000;
Building additions $550,000 - $600,000.
